  • Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore stakeholders’ perceptions of inefficiencies as they occur in commercial construction and development projects. The problem was that strategies aimed at addressing controllable inefficiencies to increase project and organizational success remained unknown. This qualitative single case study design involved analyzing project management’s perceptions and experiences of the following eight purposively selected primary stakeholders: architects, general contractors, subcontractors, and city building officials in commercial construction and development projects. The dissertation was based on two construction sites in the Midwestern region of the United States. The researcher elicited participant responses regarding their project management practices using semi-structured individual interviews conducted over Zoom. Participants included architects, city building officials, general contractors and major sub-contractors. Results were based on thematic analysis following a six-step process. Questions involved how and in what ways do commercial construction stakeholders perceive inefficiency in project management? How and in what ways do commercial construction stakeholders perceive the controllable factors that can be addressed to improve inefficiency in commercial construction project management? What aspects of commercial construction project management can be addressed to influence or reduce inefficiencies in construction project management? The participants focused on communication and leadership; thus, leaders can use the study results to enact better management practices in the construction industry based on the perceptions of individuals with direct involvement in construction management projects.
